A young family in the UK is mourning the unexpected loss of 21-year-old Lucas Martin, a recent graduate from the University of Liverpool, who succumbed to meningitis just days after exhibiting what his family thought were typical “fresher’s flu” symptoms.

“Reflecting on it, the only thing that might have changed the outcome would have been awareness of meningitis,” his brother Connor Martin shared with the BBC. “It seemed like a really bad virus he was dealing with, but none of us considered it could be meningitis.”
Unlike many cases of meningitis, Lucas did not display any of the classic symptoms, such as a rash or light sensitivity, which made it nearly impossible to identify the disease in its early stages.
How quickly it happened
In just five days, his health declined, and by September 10, his father realized something was off.
“He was having difficulty forming sentences and was mumbling,” Connor shared.
The family hurried him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed and put into an induced coma — but sadly, Lucas never woke up. He died on September 12, leaving his family heartbroken.
Connor reminisced about his brother’s life and dreams, describing him as a motivated and charming young man.
“We refer to him as a force of nature,” he mentioned. “He was very entrepreneurial… just an incredibly driven and personable young man. He was taken from us too soon.”
Lucas, according to his family, was a source of hope and happiness for everyone around him. His talent for lifting others’ spirits, even during tough times, was remarkable.
A life-saving lesson
In the aftermath of his passing, the family has established Looky’s Aid, a charity in memory of Lucas that provides support to young individuals facing health challenges through scholarships and community initiatives.
Connor hopes that his brother’s experience will act as a crucial lesson for others. “If you’re feeling concerned, take action. Don’t simply brush it off as flu. We strive not to blame ourselves — we just didn’t consider it,” he shared.
