Pattie Mellette is a talented scriptwriter and producer, but she is best recognized today as the mother of pop star Justin Bieber.

Justin Bieber stands as one of the most prominent celebrities globally, and many believe that the Canadian artist has it all.
However, even those in the limelight face their own struggles and crises, often without the public’s complete understanding. The relationship between Justin Bieber and his mother, Pattie Mallette, has had its ups and downs – and given her challenging past, it’s not surprising that their relationship has been complex.
Pattie Mallette was born on April 2, 1975, in Stratford, Ontario, and hails from a French-Canadian heritage. Unfortunately, her early years were overshadowed by a tragic loss. When Pattie was only 2 years old, her 5-year-old sister, Sally, was hit by a car while crossing the street and tragically lost her life. This heartbreaking incident would leave a lasting impact on Pattie’s family and her formative years.
Pattie became a mother to Justin when she was just 17 years old. At that time, she was single and had already faced her share of challenges. As reported by Daily Mail, Pattie raised Justin on her own in a low-income housing unit in Canada, with some assistance from her parents, who are Justin’s grandparents.
Pattie shared that she endured years of various forms of abuse and violence, starting from the age of 3. She recounted:
“My offenders include a male babysitter, the grandfather of one of my friends, and neighborhood kids who seemed to be more mature than their age,” she explained.
By the time she turned 14, she started experimenting with different substances. During this period, she also began shoplifting and was expelled from school for igniting a fire in the bathroom. Unfortunately, the cycle of sexual abuse persisted. In her book, Pattie recounts experiencing date rape at the age of 15.
“I was sexually violated so many times that over the years, it started to feel normal. It’s a bizarre situation – recognizing that something is wrong while simultaneously finding it familiar and ordinary,” she stated.
As a young girl, Mallette cultivated a love for acting and singing. By the time she turned nine, she was already appearing on local television programs like Romper Room and Big Top Talent, a children’s talent show aired in her region.
When she was 15, she started a relationship with Jeremy Beiber. Their romance lasted for four years, but at 16, she left home. She managed to survive through theft and drug dealing.
“My childhood was filled with pain,” Mallette shared with George Stroumboulopoulos, as reported by Cosmopolitan. “I had a passion for the arts that I connect with Justin, and we sort of bond over that.”
As her past and present habits began to weigh heavily on her, her mental health worsened.
Following an extended time filled with hopelessness and suicidal ideation, the 17-year-old attempted to end her life. She was admitted to a mental health facility that practiced Christian conversion therapy.
Once she was discharged from the hospital, Mallette sought out old friends and colleagues who did not share the same newfound faith she had embraced. It was during this time that she reestablished her connection with Jeremy Beiber.
After dating for six months, Pattie discovered she was expecting. Justin was born in London, Ontario, on March 1, 1994.
Initially, Pattie and Jeremy continued their relationship after their son’s birth, but they ultimately chose to separate after a few months.
Despite the challenges she faced, Pattie remained a caring and involved mother. She supported Justin in his musical pursuits, even assisting him in entering the 2007 Stratford Star talent competition during his teenage years.
The now-famous singer secured second place with his performance of Ne-Yo’s “So Sick,” and Pattie shared the video of his triumphant act on YouTube. The video, along with the additional ones she kept uploading, became quite popular over time.
Mallette’s memoir was released in September 2012 by the Christian publisher Revell.
The book, named “Nowhere But Up,” not only highlighted Pattie’s challenging childhood but also illustrated how she harnessed faith and love to cultivate optimism and strive to be the best single mother she could for her son.
Today, their bond has evolved.
“As children reach a certain age, the way you parent evolves, and it becomes challenging to let them go,” Mallette shared with People in 2013, when her son celebrated his 19th birthday.
“His life revolved around mine, and now I’ve had to loosen my grip a bit and allow him to be independent. It’s tough not being able to oversee every decision that your adult child makes.”
Following his significant breakthrough, Justin Bieber encountered legal issues. He was arrested in 2014 after police had to stop him around 4 a.m. for street racing.
This event caused a strain in the relationship between mother and son.
“I always hoped my mom wouldn’t feel let down by me, and I realized she did. We had a period of silence between us, which made it challenging to restore that trust… it’s tough, but things are improving. She’s such an incredible woman, and I love her,” the star expressed to Billboard in 2015, as cited by Cosmopolitan.
However, that chapter in Justin’s life is nearly a distant memory now, and Pattie beams with pride for her son.
“I’m incredibly proud of the wonderful young man you are and the one you are evolving into. None of us are flawless and we never will be, (so we must always extend patience and grace to one another), but your authentic and growing relationship with Jesus shines through in the decisions you make each day and the positive ‘fruit’ you produce. I truly admire your character and integrity. You are growing beautifully and possess wisdom beyond your years,” she posted on Instagram.
