Angry-looking ‘snakes’ Spotted Lurking In Tree, But Everything Is Not As It Seems

Planet Earth is home to a wide variety of species and animals that never fail to captivate us. The way they interact and adapt to their environment is truly amazing, maintaining a delicate balance in their ecosystem.

I recently stumbled upon images of three “angry snakes” hiding in a tree, sparking my curiosity. I wasn’t the only one who was tricked by these stunning photos.

The sight of one snake in a tree is scary, but three together can send shivers down anyone’s spine. However, the attention-grabbing images don’t actually feature snakes—it’s something completely different.

Nature is filled with a vast array of different species, showcasing immense biodiversity across the globe. Each species plays a unique role and has its own function within its ecosystem.

Furthermore, animals and plants have developed incredible adaptations and survival strategies over time. For instance, some insects have evolved camouflage colors to blend in with their surroundings and avoid predators. Additionally, certain species have developed toxic substances as a defense mechanism against enemies.

This fact was further emphasized when images of three angry-looking “snakes” started circulating online. In 2021, a photo shared on Twitter by Rob Allam puzzled users as it appeared to show three angry-looking “serpents” hiding in a tree. However, it didn’t take long for users to realize that there was more to the story than initially perceived.

The trio of “snakes” is actually just an optical illusion created by a part of the wings of two different moth species, the Atlas moth. This unique moth species, found in the forests of Asia, has the ability to mimic the appearance of a snake. With wings that can reach up to 24 cm (9.4 in) in wingspan and a wing surface area of about 160 cm2 (≈25 in2), the Atlas moth is one of the largest species of butterflies and moths.

The body of the Atlas moth is much smaller compared to its wings, creating a noticeable size contrast. It was first observed by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 and is considered one of the largest insects in the world. Its name comes from Atlas, the Titan in Greek mythology, due to its impressive size.

Rob, a Twitter user, shared the viral picture along with an explanation.

Attacus Atlas is among the largest butterflies worldwide, and during its adult stage, it lives only for a brief span of two weeks. Its primary objective during this stage is to lay eggs and safeguard them until they hatch, all the while camouflaging itself as a snake,” he wrote.

A lot of people on social media initially struggled to believe that the creature in question was indeed a moth.

“That disguise is really good,” one user wrote.

Another user expressed surprise, saying, ”How’s that top one not an actual snake? This moth would live longer if it didn’t look like I wanted to beat it with a broom.”

Atlas moths, despite appearances, are not strong or steady fliers. They choose to conserve their energy by resting during the day and only taking flight at night.

The Atlas moth has a unique way of protecting itself when it feels in danger. It descends to the ground and moves in a wriggling motion while flapping its wings to look like a snake’s head. This interesting behavior was observed by the National History Museum. If you want to see an Atlas moth up close, you might have to go to the tropical forests of Asia. But there have also been sightings of these moths in some parts of Europe and the United States.

Back in 2012, the BBC reported an interesting event where a massive Atlas moth was found on a windowsill in Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester. The family who stumbled upon it initially thought it was a bat due to its enormous size. It is speculated that this extraordinary creature had probably escaped from someone’s personal collection. Unfortunately, it passed away shortly after its discovery.

In a truly significant occurrence, a different Atlas moth was photographed in Bellevue, Washington, in July 2022. This was an exceptional event because it was the first time this species had been seen in the United States. Additionally, another one was discovered in Sweden in 2022.

“This is a ‘gee-whiz’ type of insect, because it is so large,” said Sven Spichiger, the managing entomologist for the state Agriculture Department told NBC News. ‘

He added, “Even if you aren’t on the lookout for insects, this is the type that people get their phones out and take a picture of — they are that striking.”

Sharing this article on Facebook would be great, as it would help more people discover this enormous and remarkable moth. Its unique features and the fact that it rarely appears outside its natural habitat are definitely worth showcasing and admiring!
