Saturday Night Live, commonly referred to as SNL, is a cherished weekly comedy program in America. Recently, the show aired a sketch that humorously targeted J.K. Rowling, the mind behind the Harry Potter series.
The sketch centered around her views on gender, which she has openly shared. The author spends a significant amount of time elaborating on her beliefs, which some people view as anti-trans.
Emma Watson, the actress known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, was one of the individuals who openly opposed Rowling and her views.
This led to Rowling labeling Watson as ‘ignorant’ and criticizing her for commenting on Rowling’s beliefs, which the author felt was unwarranted.
“They believe that our past professional relationship grants them a special right—nay, a duty—to publicly critique me and my opinions,” she expressed in a statement.
“Even years after they (Watson and Daniel Radcliffe) stopped acting in Potter, they still act as if they are the unofficial representatives of the world I created,” the 60-year-old expressed in her outburst.
She reminisced about meeting the two when they were young children and felt a sense of protectiveness towards them. She stated, “When you’ve known someone since they were ten, it’s difficult to let go of that protectiveness.”
“Until quite recently, I couldn’t shake off the memory of children who needed gentle guidance through their lines in a daunting film studio,” Rowling remarked.
“Emma has so little real-life experience that she’s unaware of her own ignorance,” she bluntly asserted.
Rowling’s outburst against the two actors she once held dear stemmed from their comments and criticism of her views.
SNL chose to approach the situation with its trademark humor. Comedian Bowen Yang portrayed Dobby the house elf, a character from the Harry Potter franchise. In the skit, he states that his master, J.K. Rowling, has sent him to clarify who a woman is “once and for all.”
“Master Rowling has contributed so much to Dobby and to inclusion overall,” the character remarks.
“Do you remember when Dumbledore was revealed to be gay after the books were published, and when Hermione was portrayed as Black only on Broadway? And what about Cho Chang… was Cho Chang Asian? Dobby can’t recall if the character named ‘Cho Chang’ was indeed Asian,” the monologue continued, eliciting much laughter.
The character then moves closer to the camera and pretends to bang his head against it repeatedly, prompting host Michael Che to inquire, “Dobby, why do you keep hurting yourself?”
“Why? Dobby doesn’t know,” he responds.
“Maybe because house elves are always seen as the issue, even though we make up only 1% of the population. House elves aren’t the victims. Master Rowling is. She receives so much hate mail.” This was, of course, a direct response to a recent post by Rowling criticizing Emma Watson, referencing a time when she felt unsafe and Watson only sent her a note that said, “I’m so sorry for what you’re going through.” Rowling was not pleased with the gesture, stating that Watson had her contact information.
“This was during a period when [various] threats against me were at their highest, and I had to significantly increase my personal security measures while constantly worrying about my family’s safety,” she had written.
Many netizens found the entire sketch to be hilarious. One user commented, “why is bowen yang the funniest human ever dobby on snl!” However, not everyone shared the same enthusiasm. Another user posted on X, “Bowen clearly has issues with JK. Naturally, he doesn’t present any solid arguments.”
