Remember Phoebe Cates? This is why the ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ star left her acting career.

Phoebe Cates became an icon after her topless scene by the pool in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982. Rolling Stone magazine called it “the most unforgettable bikini moment in film history.”

Cates was born into a family of actors and directors, so it was natural for them to pursue acting.

She had a passion for dancing as a teenager and was even awarded a scholarship to the School of American ballet. Unfortunately, she had to give up dancing at the age of 14 because of a knee injury.

She switched from dancing to modeling and gained fame as a teen model, appearing in various magazines including Seventeen. Eventually, she decided to pursue a career in acting.

She mentioned that her modeling career became repetitive, so she continued just for the money.

During a party at Studio 54 in New York, Cates connected with her film agent and later received training from Robert Ravan, the founder of The Actors’ Circle in the city.

”I just knew that I didn’t want to go to college. And that it would be a great way getting out of college if I could get a couple of movies or something. Seriously. It’s true,” she told The Daily Item in 1985.

Cates made her first appearance in a movie in 1982 as Sarah in Paradise. She then starred in other films like Experienced and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

She mentioned that in this industry, if a girl desires a profession, she must be open to performing in revealing attire. If she possesses an attractive physique, why not flaunt it?

Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eric Stoltz, and Forest Whitaker were among the rising stars who made their mark in Fast Times at Ridgemont High when it was released.

“Well, it was a funny thing because we were all so young when we made it. And then it came out and it was this big hit, you know, where you’d go to the theater and people would say the lines with it, and people had obviously seen the movie over and over again,” Jennifer Jason Leigh told The Daily News.

Cates’ career skyrocketed, but she later chose to move on from acting.

Having children played a significant role in her choice. She and her husband, Kevin Kline, a highly respected theater actor who is 16 years older than her, decided to take turns in their acting careers to ensure that their children always had a parent around.

Cates and Kline celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary. In 2017, on their 27th anniversary, they shared that the secret to a lasting marriage is taking care of it.

The ex-teen model and actress now owns a shop called Blue Tree on 1283 Madison Avenue in New York City, where she lives with her family on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

She works a regular job from 9 to 5 and also sells perfumes, clothes, and presents.

Phoebe Cates’ stunning beauty remains unchanged.
