Black Canada Lynx Caught On Camera For The First Time.

The Canada Lynx, scientifically known as Lynx canadensis, is a type of lynx that is found in North America, which includes Canada and some areas of the United States.

The Canada Lynx usually has a fur coat that is light brownish-grey, but there have been occasional reports of individuals with black fur.

In 2022, someone was lucky enough to capture black-colored type on camera, and these pictures quickly became popular all over the world.

A researcher from the University of Alberta in Canada captured the animal. Thomas Jung, who works for the Government of Yukon, filmed the animal on his phone.

The findings were documented in an article “Paint it black: first record of melanism in Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis),” Mammalia.

The video was filmed in a countryside neighborhood close to Whitehorse, Yukon. In the footage, the lynx can be observed from approximately 50 meters away, not causing any trouble. There were a few individuals and a dog nearby, and eventually, the lynx sneaked away due to the dog’s barking. When it comes to behavior, the Canada Lynx prefers to be alone and keeps to itself.

Animal experts identified the creature in the blurry video as a Canada lynx, but were unable to distinguish many specific characteristics.

”It had a black coat containing whitish gray guard hairs throughout, as well as whitish gray hairs in the facial ruff and the rostrum and dorsal regions,” Jung reports.

The majority of lynx species have similar coloring. During winter, Canada lynx usually have silvery gray coats, while in the summer their coats often become reddish brown.

The lynx seen in the video is a very rare animal because of its unique coat colors.

Jung states that differences like these can either be advantageous (adaptive) for evolution or pose a disadvantage (maladaptive).

Scientists are still unsure whether melanism is beneficial or harmful in any species. Jung, on the other hand, thinks that melanism in lynx is disadvantageous because it reduces their ability to blend in with their surroundings. This means that when hunting in the winter, the lynx with darker hair would probably be easily noticeable against the snowy background.

Amazing! It’s unbelievable that this rare creature was captured on camera. Share your thoughts in the comments!
